(1) Position Created. There is created and established the position of police chief to perform such duties as are prescribed by contract for law enforcement services with the Snohomish County sheriff’s office.

(2) Appointment. The Snohomish County sheriff may appoint a Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy as police chief per the process described in the city’s interlocal agreement with Snohomish County.

(3) Oath. Upon appointment, the police chief must take an oath of office to faithfully defend the Constitution of the United States of America, the state of Washington, and the laws thereunder, including all ordinances of the city of Stanwood.

(4) Duties and Authority.

(a) The police chief must manage the city police department and supervise its employees.

(b) The police chief, or the police chief’s designee, must attend each meeting of the city council, and perform the duties of sergeant-at-arms unless excused from attendance by the mayor. (Ord. 1513 § 1 (Exh. A), 2023).
