(1) Salary.

(a) The mayor may receive, as compensation for services to the city of Stanwood and attendance at regular council meetings, a payment as determined by the salary commission pursuant to Chapter 2.20 SMC.

(b) The mayor may voluntarily waive and elect not to be paid all or any portion of the mayor’s salary during their term of office in the same manner available to council members in SMC 2.02.090.

(2) Expenses. The mayor may receive reimbursement for the mayor’s actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of the duties of his office, consistent with city policy on such reimbursements.

(3) Benefits.

(a) Health Insurance. The mayor is entitled to receive the same health insurance benefits as are available to the city’s exempt employees.

(b) Retirement. The mayor may be eligible for pension and retirement benefits available to other city employees, including those available through the State Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), if the mayor meets the employment requirements per state law.

(c) Paid Time Off. As an elected official with a fixed salary, the mayor does not accrue leave time and is not eligible for vacation, sick, or disability time. (Ord. 1513 § 1 (Exh. A), 2023).
