(1) Default Compensation. The compensation of council members must be determined by the salary commission pursuant to Chapter 2.20 SMC.

(2) Mayor Pro Tem. In the event of the absence of the mayor for a period of 30 days or longer, the mayor pro tempore is entitled to receive the mayor’s compensation for the duration of said absence.

(3) Expenses. Each council member may be reimbursed for actual expenses incurred in the discharge of the council member’s official duties upon presentation of a claim therefor, after allowance and approval by motion of the city council.

(4) Waiver and Election Not to Receive Compensation. A council member may waive all or any portion of that council member’s salary during that council member’s term of office.

(a) Notice of waiver must be:

(i) In writing and delivered to the finance director prior to the effective date of such waiver; and

(ii) Signed by the council member and their spouse, if married, as required by RCW 49.48.100. Signatures must be acknowledged by a notary public.

(b) A waiver is only effective for salary earned starting on the effective date of the waiver.

(c) A waiver continues in effect until withdrawn in writing, signed by the council member and the council member’s spouse, and delivered to the finance director. (Ord. 1513 § 1 (Exh. A), 2023).
